Alex Park Lake birds in October

On a sunny Sunday 23 October, I counted the waterbirds on the lake.

Mute Swan 2

Canada Goose 24

Mallard 45

Tufted Duck 10 (pair pictured)

Coot 6

Moorhen 6

Black-headed Gull 75

Grey Wagtail 2

So no Common Gull or Heron today. Goosanders should arrive later in the winter.

The day before, I saw a Fox and a Brown Rat next to the park on Demesne Road. It’s possible that the sudden surge of duck-and-goose noise at 4am this morning is related to the presence of the foxes.
