Steve Atkins (rom the GM Local Record Centre), Debbie and I were the crazy people in Hough End Clough choosing to spend our bank holiday recording bird song at 5am.
Steve and Debbie were slightly more sensible in that they had actually been to bed for a few hours. Whereas I had been out clubbing till 3.30am and was still a little tipsy when I met up with them an hour later!
The wrens were in full voice, drowning out most of the other birds. It’s incredible how loud they are for such tiny creatures.
Steve wanted to test out new equipment, and we found out we really do need proper external mics and parabolic reflectors to get the best quality recordings.
Birds heard and/or sighted: wren, chiffchaff, blackcap, robin, song thrush (also very loud), blackbird, wood pigeon, stock pigeon, crow, magpie, heron, mallard, blue tit, kingfisher, mistle thrush, whitethroat, pied wagtail, rose-ringed parakeet.
