Avian pox virus

The RSPB is asking the public for help in tracking the spread of the avian pox virus, a viral skin infection that affects great tits particularly badly. It causes warty lesions round the eyes and beak that can interfere with ability to fly and see, making them more vulnerable to predation.

Garden bird feeding stations should be regularly disinfected and bird baths cleaned daily to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Sightings of birds with symptoms of avian pox should be reported to the RSPB Wildlife Enquiries Unit on 01767 693 690 or online here
